Link Prospecting: Tips and Hacks from an Agency

Link prospecting is an essential part of link building as this is when you find the right opportunities that will secure you backlinks in the future.

Link prospecting can also be challenging and time-consuming because there is no formal education and documentation for a successful link prospecting and link building in general. It differs not only from one industry to another but from one company to another.

Successful link building specialists are often self-taught or have a mentor who is self-taught. This infers a lot of errors and trials until you get desirable results.

However, nothing is permanent in life, so is the time that once was required for link prospecting.

Before, you had to do manual research, then check the possible backlinks in several SEO tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush to understand Domain Rating, Spam Score, Traffic etc.

Afterwards, you had to use LinkedIn or Twitter to find relevant contacts. Eventually, discover their emails and outreach. And most notably along the way, you pray to get some responses.

So, you would have spent hours and days praying and researching…but your precious time is not used effectively because you can leverage most of this process. Bear with me; we are close to a major discovery.

So as you might have guessed, in this article, we will discuss how to automate link prospecting.

How to Automate Link Prospecting

Analyzing Backlinks

Link Prospecting is at the Core of Link Building

There is one tool that you need right now, and it is free!

Spoiler alert: it is LinkSignal.ai

Believe me, this is not a marketing piece about our tool. Every person from our team has been there and experienced the hardship and boredom of link prospecting.

We stopped for a while, and instead of motivating ourselves to continue the same old way, we decided to treat ourselves and develop a tool that will do everything in a matter of one click.

Instead of immediately finding domains that link to your competitor, we will use a slightly different approach here.

Jot down several keywords that your website is trying to rank for. I will use LinkSignal as our examples. Some of the keywords we are trying to rank for are:

  • SEO Tools
  • Backlink Strategies
  • On-Page SEO

Agency Tip: If you are not sure about keywords, no worries, some of your team members indeed have already done the job for you. Head to your blog sections and use the keywords in the article headlines. For example, on our blog, we have the following articles:

As you already guess, these are the articles that help me get the keywords above.

Now, the next step is actually to go to linksignal.ai and start the process.

All you have to do is add the keyword you are trying to rank for and your website.

We will proceed with the “SEO Tools” keyword.

When you click “Get Started”, the tool first goes to Google and pulls the results, then it goes to different SEO tools and shows the following metrics for each site:

  • Page Authority (PA)
  • Domain Authority (DA)
  • Spam Score (SS)
  • URL Rating (UR)
  • Domain Rating (DR)
  • Root Domains (RD)

You can also analyze the number of backlinks each webpage is getting and the type of backlinks (Nofollow vs Dofollow).

Besides the word count, the number of images the webpage has, the author of the piece and publish/update data are also presented among the results.

This is done literally under a second. This process takes forever if done manually. Also, let’s be honest; we do not have access to multiple tools, neither desire to analyze each search engine result.

To cut it short, this is what you get when you click the “Get Started” button in the homepage.

Now it is time to analyze each result. Your company or you as a link builder, should have several metrics.

Agency Tip: Choose only the results that have PA and DA above 30 and SS lower than 5 or 6. For a backlink profile, go with the options that have the most Dofollow backlinks.

Now the next step is analyzing each result’s backlink profile.

You should have already selected a few results. At this stage, you can either choose to analyze the backlinks or download contact information related to the web pages.

We need to analyze domain backlinks.

This is where the magic begins.

While you wait a few seconds, the tool actually pulls all the backlinks that your selected webpage is getting.

As you can see, we have a little over 800 backlinks.

Agency Tip: Do not start researching all these results. Even if your website is just beginning, you do not want to get links from crappy sites. So filter the list and only start analyzing the results that have DR, DA and PA above 30 and SS lower than 5.

Agency Hack: You do not want to get Nofollow links. So tell the tool only to show Dofollow links. This way, you will maximize the possibility of getting link juice when you secure a backlink opportunity.

So now we end up with 310 results. Turn on your favorite playlist as this step might take a while.

Some of the sites might be already familiar to you so you can quickly select or skip them as a further backlink opportunity.

You can go to the page, audit real quick for other sites and decide if they are a fit.

Once you have selected all the relevant sites, the last step is to get the contact information. Linksignal takes care of this too.

All you have to do is click Unlock Contacts and get the information needed to proceed to the outreach.

You can also export the contacts in excel for further use.

Link prospecting is the most important element of link building. If you do not have legit backlink opportunities with relevant contact information, your outreach might not be very successful.

Find the right opportunity used to take a lot of time and resources. But now with Linksignal.ai, the process is faster and easier.
